Meet our Coaches

Coach Sean Young

Sean grew up just around the corner in Bon Air.  He swam at Poseidon before going on to swim at Mary Washington College. During college he worked as a coach in the RMAL at Bon Air, where he also spend his summers swimming. Since Sean started teaching high school English, he coached high school and summer league teams in Northern Virginia before he and his family moved back to Richmond in 2009. Currently, Sean is an English teacher for Henrico County Public Schools. Sean’s sons Felix and Sebastian swim for SLRA. Coach Sean is beginning his sixth summer coaching for SLRA.

Coach Mark Van Deren

Mark grew up swimming in Newport News. He was a scholarship swimmer and conference finalist at Ohio University and Old Dominion University. Mark has 20 years of coaching experience having worked with USA Swimming, summer league, US Masters and YMCA swimming teams in Virginia and North Carolina. Mark is a PE teacher for CCPS. Mark and his wife, Emily, have three sons – Jackson (9), Brady (8) and Camden (2). Jackson and Brady both swim for the Sharks.  Coach Mark is beginning his third season for SLRA.
